The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory warning residents to brace for a week of extreme temperature fluctuations. Starting today, Nairobi and several other counties will experience very hot days followed by very cold nights over the next five days.
According to the forecast, nighttime temperatures in Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka counties will drop to as low as 7°C. Daytime temperatures, on the other hand, are expected to soar up to 37°C. This stark contrast in temperatures is unusual and poses potential health risks, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with preexisting health conditions.
In his weekly weather advisory, Kenya Met Director General David Gikungu emphasized the need for residents in the affected areas to take precautions. “We urge people to dress warmly during the night and early morning hours and stay hydrated and cool during the day. These temperature swings can be harsh on the body, and it’s important to stay prepared,” Gikungu stated.
Beyond the central regions, other parts of the country are also expected to experience significant heat. Counties in the northeastern and northwestern regions, including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Turkana, and Samburu, will see daytime temperatures rise up to 37°C. This extreme heat can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke if proper measures are not taken.
Additionally, the southeastern lowland regions of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta are predicted to have daytime temperatures reaching up to 34°C. Although not as extreme as in the northern regions, these temperatures are still considerably high and warrant caution.
Residents are advised to follow the Kenya Meteorological Department’s updates closely and adhere to safety measures. Some recommendations include:
- For the Daytime Heat:
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
- Avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours.
- Wear light, breathable clothing and use sunscreen to protect from sunburn.
- Keep cool by staying indoors during the hottest parts of the day, if possible.
- For the Cold Nights:
- Dress in layers to stay warm.
- Ensure vulnerable individuals are adequately protected from the cold.
- Use blankets and warm bedding to maintain body warmth during sleep.
The Kenya Met Department will continue to monitor the weather conditions and provide updates as necessary. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and prepare adequately for the upcoming weather changes.
