Mombasa County, a group of 100 youths formerly engaged in criminal activities have voluntarily surrendered and pledged to lead lawful lives. The ceremony, held at Nikodem Hall in Likoni Sub-County on Monday, brought together law enforcement officials, local leaders, and civil society organizations to witness the youths’ commitment to change.
The event was presided over by Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno, Mombasa County Commissioner Mohammed Nur, Deputy Governor Francis Thoya, and Timbwani Member of County Assembly (MCA) Hamisi Salim. These leaders commended the youths for taking a bold step towards reform and promised to support them in their journey to reintegrate into society.
During the ceremony, the reformed youths expressed their willingness to abandon criminal activities such as robbery, theft, and even acts linked to terrorism. One of the individuals highlighted strained relationships with law enforcement as a key reason many youths turned to crime. He also lamented how politicians exploited vulnerable youth during election periods, using them for personal gain before abandoning them once campaigns ended.
Recognizing the importance of rehabilitation and economic empowerment, law enforcement agencies and civil society groups assured the former criminals of their commitment to assisting them in finding lawful means of livelihood. The county government pledged to provide tuition support through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) for those willing to enroll in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. This initiative aims to equip them with marketable skills that will enhance their employability.
Additionally, the county government assured the youths that they would be considered for employment opportunities, urging them to take advantage of the training programs available. Officials emphasized the importance of acquiring relevant skills to ensure a smooth transition into society and sustainable employment.
The surrender and commitment of these 100 individuals mark a hopeful turning point in the fight against crime in Likoni. With concerted efforts from the government, law enforcement, and community stakeholders, these youths have a chance to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society.
