Authorities have confirmed that 38 individuals arrested for alleged criminal activities during President William Ruto’s recent tour will be arraigned in court this morning. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stated that the suspects were apprehended for terrorizing members of the public along major Nairobi roads, including Thika Highway, Waiyaki Way, and Jogoo Road.
According to the DCI, the crackdown led to the recovery of seven motorcycles and several mobile phones, which have been detained as exhibits. The suspects are expected to face multiple charges, including robbery with violence, preparation to commit a felony, and obstruction.
The arrests come in the wake of heightened security concerns surrounding the President’s tour. Law enforcement agencies had been on high alert following reports of rising cases of organized crime and lawlessness in parts of the city. The police have assured the public that the crackdown is part of an ongoing operation to restore order and curb criminal activities.
Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes as groups of individuals engaged in acts of violence and robbery along the highways, causing panic among motorists and pedestrians. Some victims claimed they were attacked and robbed of their belongings, prompting swift police intervention.
The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order. “We will not tolerate any form of lawlessness. Those found engaging in criminal activities will be dealt with according to the law,” a senior security official stated.
Legal experts suggest that the suspects, if found guilty, could face severe penalties, particularly for charges such as robbery with violence, which carries a maximum sentence of death under Kenyan law.
Meanwhile, authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure a safer environment. The crackdown is expected to continue as police intensify their efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating within Nairobi and its environs.
The court proceedings today will shed more light on the fate of the suspects and the legal measures that will be taken against them.
