Baringo Senator William Cheptumo has passed away after battling an undisclosed illness for some time. His death on Sunday, has left a profound impact on the political landscape, with national leaders expressing their condolences and mourning the loss of a dedicated public servant.
Among those who have paid tribute is former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who remembered Cheptumo as a distinguished leader and an amiable individual. Gachagua, who served alongside Cheptumo in the 12th Parliament, lauded his contributions to legislative affairs and his sharp legal acumen.

Cheptumo had a long and distinguished career in public service. Before his election to the Senate in 2022, he served as the Member of Parliament for Baringo North from 2008 to 2022. He was a key figure in Kenya’s legislative processes and a staunch advocate for his constituents. His election as senator saw him defeat KANU party chairman Gideon Moi in a hotly contested race.
Beyond politics, Cheptumo had a strong legal background, having previously worked as a legal officer for the Central Bank of Kenya and the Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation.
