The Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) has intensified its crackdown on counterfeit goods, seizing illegally refilled liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders in Nakuru and counterfeit brake pads in Nairobi. The operations, conducted in response to public complaints and intellectual property rights violations, highlight the growing danger posed by counterfeit products in Kenya.
In a raid carried out in Molo, Nakuru County, ACA officers confiscated 136 illegally refilled gas cylinders. The operation, led by Rift Valley Regional Manager Thomas Odek, targeted unlicensed LPG distribution points following an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) complaint.
“These cylinders were refilled without authorization from the brand owner and had not undergone the required safety validation. Such practices compromise consumer safety and could result in fatal accidents,” Mr. Odek stated.
The cylinders, ranging from 6kg to 13kg and valued at approximately Ksh 438,000, were found to have bypassed critical safety checks. Though no arrests were made, authorities warned that unauthorized LPG refilling increases the risk of gas leaks, fires, and explosions. The ACA urged consumers to verify safety seals and purchase gas from licensed dealers to avoid potential hazards.
Meanwhile, in Nairobi’s Baba Dogo area, ACA inspectors raided Impala Downtown HQ Ltd following a public tip-off. Over 500 counterfeit brake pads, valued at Ksh 937,500, were seized from the premises.
ACA Inspector Omedo Mark emphasized the dangers of counterfeit automotive parts, stating, “Counterfeit brake pads are not only unsafe but can lead to severe accidents and fatalities due to their substandard quality.”
The seized products were falsely branded to imitate a leading trademark in the motor vehicle industry, deceiving unsuspecting buyers. The ACA is now working with other regulatory bodies to trace the source of these counterfeit goods and prevent their further circulation.
Authorities are also stepping up consumer awareness campaigns to educate the public on the importance of purchasing genuine automotive parts. The ACA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring compliance with intellectual property laws.
