The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) has welcomed the recent political agreement between President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, viewing it as a significant step toward national stability, inclusivity, and economic growth.
COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli lauded the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two leaders, stating that its implementation will create a period of political tranquility, fostering a conducive environment for economic development.
“We strongly believe that Kenya’s development and prosperity have been hindered by prolonged politicking, which negatively impacts job creation and the improvement of working conditions for Kenyan workers,” Atwoli said in a statement.
He noted that the MoU promises a more stable political environment, benefiting workers, women, and children who often suffer the most from economic downturns caused by political instability. Atwoli emphasized that Kenya’s unity and stability should transcend individual political ambitions and called for a governance framework prioritizing stability, economic growth, and inclusive development.
“It is imperative to recognize that the unity and stability of Kenya transcend any individual political ambitions. What the country needs is not perpetual political antagonism but a governance framework that prioritizes stability, economic growth, and inclusive development,” he stated.
Atwoli further stressed the need for a responsible opposition that provides constructive oversight rather than opposing for the sake of opposition. He reiterated COTU’s commitment to supporting political stability, as it directly contributes to economic growth, job creation, and better working conditions for all Kenyans.
“As a nation, we must move beyond politics as a constant preoccupation and focus on governance, ensuring that once a government is in place, it is supported in executing its development agenda while maintaining the necessary checks and balances,” he added.
Key agreements within the MoU include the implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, measures to address youth unemployment, and the enforcement of the two-thirds gender rule. Additionally, Ruto and Raila pledged to enhance inclusivity across religious and political divides, uphold constitutionalism, and safeguard the right to peaceful assembly.
The agreement also includes provisions for compensating victims of human rights violations, further underscoring the commitment to justice and national reconciliation.
This political truce is expected to lay the foundation for Kenya’s long-term stability and development, fostering a cooperative political environment that prioritizes national interests over partisan divisions.
