Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has called on Kenya’s youth particularly Gen Z and Millennials to go beyond casting ballots and actively seek elective positions in the 2027 General Election if they want to truly transform the country.
Speaking on the importance of political participation, Babu emphasized that voting alone is not enough to bring about change. He noted that while casting a ballot is a political act, real influence comes from being in positions of power. “Everybody who votes is a politician,” Babu remarked. “But after voting, what happens? Some of the people elected become dealers instead of leaders. They destroy rather than transform the country.”
The outspoken MP challenged young people to not just engage in political discourse or protests but to step forward and take leadership roles. He pointed out that Gen Z and Millennials make up about 65 to 70 percent of Kenya’s population giving them a powerful numerical advantage if mobilized effectively.
“This generation has the numbers. They can produce a president, governors, senators, MPs, and even MCAs. The power is literally in their hands,” Babu stated. “If you’re not invited to the table, break that table. Don’t wait to be included step up and lead.”
Babu’s call comes in the wake of the historic Gen Z-led protests in June 2024, which forced President William Ruto to reject the controversial Finance Bill 2024, despite its approval by the National Assembly. The protests highlighted the political awareness and mobilization potential of Kenya’s younger population.
As one of the youngest lawmakers in the National Assembly serving his second term, Babu Owino has consistently advocated for youth empowerment. His latest appeal aligns with the growing national sentiment that young people should take center stage in shaping Kenya’s political future.
With the 2027 elections fast approaching, Babu’s message serves as a rallying call for Kenya’s youth: don’t just demand change—be the change.
