Baringo Senator William Cheptumo has passed away, prompting an outpouring of grief from leaders across Kenya. Cheptumo, who had been battling an undisclosed illness, died on Sunday at Nairobi Hospital. His passing marks the loss of a veteran politician who dedicated his life to public service, both as a Member of Parliament and later as a senator.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula led the tributes, describing Cheptumo as a mentor and a leader who embodied fairness, wisdom, and compassion. “Senator Cheptumo was more than a legislator; he was a man of the people, selfless and deeply devoted to those he served,” Wetang’ula said.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi also expressed deep sorrow, highlighting Cheptumo’s contributions to Kenya’s legislative landscape. “His unwavering commitment to advancing the development agenda for the people he represented has left an indelible mark,” Mudavadi noted.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Cheptumo’s dedication to devolution and national cohesion. “The Senate of Kenya has lost a leader who firmly believed in devolution and used every opportunity to advance its cause,” Kingi stated.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who worked closely with Cheptumo, mourned the loss of a political mentor. “As Chair of the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee in Parliament, he played a crucial role in legal and institutional reforms,” Murkomen said. He also highlighted Cheptumo’s commitment to security, particularly in combating cattle rustling in Baringo County.
Environment CS Aden Duale described Cheptumo as a true patriot and servant leader, recalling their political journey together since 2007. “His unwavering commitment to justice and integrity defined his leadership,” Duale remarked.
Cheptumo was elected Baringo Senator in the 2022 general election, unseating KANU chairman Gideon Moi. Before joining the Senate, he served as MP for Baringo North from 2008 to 2022, holding roles such as Assistant Minister and Chair of key parliamentary committees. His background in law and finance, having worked at the Central Bank of Kenya, informed his approach to governance.
As the nation mourns, leaders have praised his dedication to justice, security, and service delivery. His passing leaves a significant gap in Baringo politics and national leadership. Many now await the announcement of his successor and the political shifts his departure may bring.
Cheptumo is survived by his family, friends, and the people of Baringo, whom he served tirelessly. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
