Bishop Edward Mwai of Jesus Winner Ministry in Roysambu, Nairobi, has publicly declared that he has forgiven those who insulted him for accepting a Ksh20 million donation from President William Ruto. The donation, made on March 2, sparked outrage, particularly among youth who accused the bishop of benefiting from questionable funds.
During a Sunday service, Bishop Mwai addressed his congregation, stating that he had also urged law enforcement to release several young individuals who had been arrested after attempting to occupy his church in protest.
“All those who have insulted me and called me names, I have forgiven each and every one of them. I have also asked God to forgive them,” he said.
The bishop lamented that some political figures were exploiting young people for their own gains, manipulating them to turn against the church. “Our children are being used badly. God forgive them. There are those who were here, and they are just goons, some of them even had Jesus Winner Ministry badges,” he remarked.
Earlier, clergy members from Nyeri had called for calm, urging youth to abandon their planned demonstration at Jesus Winner Ministry’s headquarters. Defending Bishop Mwai’s decision to accept the donation, Reverend Veronica Waruguru of Jesus Winner Ministry in Nyeri emphasized that religious institutions lack the means to verify the origins of monetary contributions.
“We have no means of determining whether money donated to the church is clean or dirty,” she explained.
Reverend Benson Mwangi echoed similar sentiments, encouraging other church leaders to accept financial support for their ministries. “Bishop Mwai was right in accepting the money because he is doing what he is supposed to do—taking care of orphans, widows, and underprivileged members of society,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Bishop Mwai revealed that he and his wife had received thousands of abusive messages, forcing them to purchase new mobile lines for communication.
On March 6, President Ruto hosted Bishop Mwai at State House to discuss the progress of the church’s ongoing construction in Roysambu. The President also pledged to mobilize his friends to raise an additional Ksh100 million to support the Ksh1 billion project.
