Nairobi’s Shauri Moyo Police Station was set ablaze on Wednesday by an enraged group of youths protesting the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old student. The unrest, which began in the morning, also saw two police vehicles torched, with demonstrators lighting bonfires along the roads in escalating tensions.
The protests stemmed from a Tuesday night incident at Majengo Social Hall, where an altercation between undercover police officers and a group of youths ended in gunfire. Police reports indicate that the officers were conducting a random search, targeting a suspect known for alleged drug trafficking. However, when the suspect resisted and called for help, a confrontation ensued as a group returning from a mosque intervened.
Faced with mounting aggression, one officer fired his weapon in an attempt to disperse the crowd. A bullet struck a 17-year-old student in the head, critically injuring him. The teenager was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries, sparking widespread outrage.
In response, angry residents took to the streets demanding justice, leading to violent clashes with law enforcement. Nairobi Police Commander George Sedah confirmed the destruction of property, including the police station and vehicles, attributing some of the actions to criminal elements within the protest.
Police retaliated with tear gas in a bid to contain the unrest, as demonstrators continued to demand accountability for the killing. One police officer reportedly sustained serious injuries to his hip, hand, and back during the confrontation.
Authorities have called for calm and assured the public of a thorough investigation into the shooting. Meanwhile, human rights activists have condemned the use of excessive force by the police, calling for accountability and justice for the slain student.
The incident highlights growing tensions between law enforcement and communities, particularly in areas where extrajudicial killings and police brutality have been longstanding concerns. With protests continuing to escalate, the government faces mounting pressure to address police conduct and ensure that justice is served.
As investigations proceed, Nairobi residents remain on edge, fearing further confrontations between security forces and demonstrators in the coming days.
