Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen met with the Senate Committee on National Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations on Thursday to discuss strategies aimed at strengthening national security and governance.
During the meeting, Murkomen updated the committee on the Ministry of Interior’s ongoing efforts to enhance security across the country. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the executive and the legislature to ensure effective policy implementation, accountability, and necessary legal reforms.
“The Senate Committee on National Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations plays a crucial role in ensuring good governance, security, and stability in our country,” Murkomen stated in a tweet on X after the meeting. He reiterated that the government remains committed to improving the security framework through policy-driven initiatives and enhanced coordination among security agencies.
The Senate delegation was led by Committee Chairperson Senator Fatuma Dullo, alongside Vice Chairperson Prof. Tom Ojienda (Kisumu), and members Julius Murgor (West Pokot), Steve Lelegwe (Samburu), and Joseph Kamau (Lamu). Also in attendance were Parliamentary and Ministry staff who provided technical insights into the discussions.
Key areas covered in the deliberations included enhancing border security, addressing emerging threats, and reviewing existing security policies to align them with current national and regional challenges. The CS and the committee members explored strategies to improve intelligence gathering, community policing, and inter-agency cooperation.
Murkomen highlighted the Ministry’s ongoing projects, including the modernization of security infrastructure, increased deployment of personnel to high-risk areas, and the implementation of digital solutions to enhance surveillance and crime prevention.
The meeting also touched on legal and policy reforms aimed at ensuring that security agencies operate within the framework of accountability and efficiency. The committee reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Ministry in reviewing and passing necessary legislation to bolster national security.
