Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo has sparked debate by claiming that President William Ruto has effectively handed over power to opposition leader Raila Odinga, albeit without the official instruments of office. His remarks follow a high-profile meeting between the two leaders in Mombasa, signaling a potential political realignment in Kenya’s governance structure.
Speaking on Citizen TV, Maanzo suggested that Odinga, with the support of Ruto’s broad-based government, has gained significant influence within the administration. “President Ruto has handed over power to Raila Odinga except the sword. The opposition is in government, and therefore, what else is William Ruto going to do in this country?” he remarked, emphasizing that Odinga now appears to be shaping government policy.
The meeting between Ruto and Odinga took place shortly after the latter’s unsuccessful bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship. Following the discussions, Ruto publicly acknowledged the need to work closely with Odinga to advance Kenya’s development agenda. “We close ranks and focus on what we can do for Kenya. The things that require our collective effort as an administration that is now broad-based, there is every reason for us to accelerate the momentum for the delivery of the things that will transform the nation,” Ruto stated at State House, Mombasa.
The shift in dynamics has fueled speculation about Odinga’s next political move. While he has yet to announce his plans, he reassured Kenyans of his commitment to contributing where necessary. “We are available to help the continent of Africa, but more importantly, we are also available for Kenya. I’m back home, and I am going to meet with my friends and my supporters,” Odinga noted.
This emerging political alliance has left many wondering about Odinga’s role in Ruto’s administration. Some lawmakers speculate that he might be offered a key position in government, while others believe that he should reciprocate Ruto’s support by backing him in the 2027 General Election. Whether this alliance will lead to a formal coalition or remain an informal collaboration remains to be seen.
As the political landscape continues to shift, the question on many Kenyans’ minds is whether this newfound camaraderie will lead to greater national unity or if it is simply a strategic move ahead of the next election. One thing is clear Kenyan politics remains as unpredictable as ever.
