Deputy President Kithure Kindiki hosted a significant consultative meeting with leaders from Meru County on Tuesday at his official residence in Karen, Nairobi. The gathering, attended by elected officials, professionals, and religious leaders, was marked by enthusiastic chants of “Igwe, Igwe, Igwe” as Kindiki rose to address the attendees. This phrase, meaning “king” in the Igbo language, is used in northern Igbo-speaking areas in Nigeria as a mark of respect and honor, signifying the high regard in which the Deputy President is held by the Meru leaders.
As Kindiki approached the podium to speak, the leaders gave him a standing ovation, which was followed by the repeated chants of “Igwe” from the audience. Kindiki appeared visibly moved by the gesture, taking a moment to absorb the moment before asking the leaders to take their seats.
The meeting focused on the development needs of Meru County and the implementation of various government programs at both the national and county levels. Discussions also centered around priority development projects, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure, education, health, and other essential sectors in the county.
In a separate engagement earlier in the day, Kindiki was briefed by representatives from the Meru Catholic Diocese about the upcoming episcopal ordination of Monsignor Jackson Murugara, who will be the Co-adjutor Bishop-Elect of the Catholic Diocese of Meru. The ordination, set for March 19, 2025, is an important event for the local community, and Kindiki acknowledged the crucial role of the Catholic Church in driving development programs in education, health, and water, which are vital to the welfare and socio-economic growth of the people.
During his remarks, Kindiki expressed the government’s appreciation for the work of the religious community and urged the church to continue praying for the unity, safety, and stability of Kenya. His remarks resonated with the audience, underscoring the importance of partnerships between the government and religious institutions in building a more prosperous nation.
This meeting with Meru leaders marks the eighth such consultative engagement that the Deputy President has held with various county delegations since assuming office. As part of his leadership, Kindiki continues to engage with grassroots leaders to understand their concerns and address the challenges facing their communities. His efforts reflect a commitment to fostering unity and development across the country.
