A shocking physical altercation between East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Falhada Iman and Nominated MP Umulkheir Harun (ODM) has sparked outrage after a video of the incident went viral. The scuffle, which occurred on parliamentary grounds, has raised concerns about the conduct of elected leaders and the sanctity of legislative decorum.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, MP Iman expressed deep regret over the incident, calling it “unfortunate and unacceptable.” She acknowledged that while she initially exercised restraint, the situation escalated beyond control. “In the heat of the moment, my response crossed the line of decorum expected of a public servant,” Iman admitted, taking full accountability for her actions. She emphasized that the matter is being addressed through institutional channels.
On her part, MP Umulkheir Harun described the incident as “deeply regrettable,” both as a lawmaker and as a mother. She accused Iman of harboring long-standing grievances against her work in Parliament, alleging that the EALA MP arrived with the sole intention of attacking her. “She came to Parliament with the sole intent of attacking me, catching me completely off guard,” Harun stated, confirming that she had reported the matter to the relevant authorities.
The viral footage shows the two lawmakers in a heated physical confrontation as fellow female MPs attempted—unsuccessfully—to separate them. At one point, a voice is heard pleading for assistance while another urges onlookers to stop recording. Order was only restored after the intervention of the Sergeant-at-Arms, though the two continued exchanging verbal insults even after being separated.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from the public, with many Kenyans questioning the maturity and professionalism of their leaders. Parliament is expected to address the breach of conduct, as physical altercations undermine the dignity of the legislative institution.
As investigations proceed, the focus remains on whether disciplinary action will be taken and how such incidents can be prevented in the future. For now, the altercation serves as a stark reminder of the need for civility and respect in Kenya’s political discourse.
