A road accident at Kolol area along the Iten-Kabarnet road left 12 people injured on Thursday morning after a matatu lost control and veered off the road due to brake failure.
The Toyota matatu, which belongs to Trans-West Sacco, was being driven by Jairo Masika Kamasi, 59, and was carrying 11 passengers en route to Kabarnet from Iten.
Confirming the incident, Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge stated that the vehicle encountered brake failure while descending from Kolol Viewpoint. This caused the driver to lose control, resulting in the matatu overturning.
The driver sustained a compound fracture on his right leg, while the passengers suffered various injuries, including cuts, bruises, dislocations, and fractures. Emergency response teams and good Samaritans quickly arrived at the scene to assist the victims.
All injured individuals were rushed to Iten County Referral Hospital, where they received medical attention. Hospital officials reported that some of the victims were in stable condition, while others required further treatment for more serious injuries.
The accident left the matatu extensively damaged, and it was later towed to Iten Police Station for inspection as authorities launched investigations into the cause of the brake failure.
Police Commander Mulinge took the opportunity to urge motorists to exercise extreme caution, especially along the steep and winding Iten-Kabarnet road, which is known for its challenging terrain. He emphasized the importance of regular vehicle maintenance to ensure roadworthiness and prevent such accidents.
“The safety of road users is paramount. We advise public transport operators to ensure that their vehicles undergo frequent mechanical checks, especially those operating in hilly and steep areas like this one,” Mulinge stated.
The Iten-Kabarnet road, a crucial link between Elgeyo Marakwet and Baringo counties, has witnessed several accidents in the past due to its steep slopes and sharp corners. Authorities have continuously called for stricter adherence to road safety regulations and the implementation of additional safety measures to curb road carnage.
As investigations continue, passengers and road users are reminded to be vigilant and report any concerns regarding vehicle conditions to ensure safer travels along the route.
