Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has strongly condemned the recent attack on Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya. The incident occurred during a funeral gathering in Malava, Kakamega County, where Natembeya was reportedly confronted by a hostile group of youths.
Wamalwa expressed deep concern over the growing culture of violence and hooliganism at public gatherings, particularly funerals. He emphasized the need for all leaders and citizens to denounce such actions and hold accountable those responsible for inciting violence.
“The growing culture of violence and hooliganism at funerals, especially in Western Kenya, including what happened to my DAP-Kenya Deputy Party Leader, Governor George Natembeya, yesterday at Malulu’s funeral in Malava, Kakamega County, must be condemned by all. The sponsors of these goons must also be called out,” Wamalwa stated.
The incident took place on Sunday at the home of the late Malava MP Malulu Injendi, where Natembeya had gone to pay his respects. Reports indicate that the governor faced hostility from a group of rowdy youths, forcing him to leave the venue under the protection of his security team. In a video circulated online, the governor could be seen being escorted to his vehicle as an angry crowd followed closely.
However, Natembeya has since dismissed claims that he was chased away from the funeral, terming such reports as propaganda. He maintained that he remains a respected leader in the region and cannot be intimidated.
“No one can chase me out of my own turf. Stop this desperate propaganda,” Natembeya asserted in a Facebook post.
Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa also condemned the incident, calling for calm and urging residents to honor the late Malulu Injendi by maintaining peace and respecting leaders.
”Malulu Injendi was a peace-loving leader, and from today until he is laid to rest, we want his send-off to be respectful. We do not want any form of violence, and we plead with all the residents of Kakamega to demonstrate tolerance,” Barasa said.
The incident has reignited concerns over rising political intolerance and violence in Kenya, prompting calls for responsible leadership and peaceful coexistence among citizens.
