Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has warned that while the youth, particularly Generation Z (Gen Z), are a powerful political force, they may struggle to oust President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections if they go it alone. In a recent NTV interview, Wamalwa emphasized the importance of a united, intergenerational partnership, urging the youth to collaborate with veteran political leaders to build a stronger opposition against Ruto’s re-election bid.
Wamalwa acknowledged the growing influence of Gen Z, who represent a fresh and vibrant force in Kenya’s political landscape. Their power is undeniable, as seen in the social media-led protests against tax hikes last year, which sparked a nationwide uprising that shifted the political climate. Despite their energy and large numbers, however, Wamalwa argued that Gen Z’s sheer numerical strength may not be enough to topple an incumbent president without support from older generations.
The opposition leader pointed out the risk of division within the opposition camp if Gen Zs rally behind their own presidential candidate without forging a united front with seasoned political figures. “It will take the whole country and an intergenerational kind of partnership for us to rid this country of this regime,” Wamalwa remarked. He emphasized that a fragmented opposition would only play into Ruto’s hands, ensuring his second term in office.
Addressing the trust deficit between veteran politicians and the youth, Wamalwa recognized the cynicism many young people have towards long-serving politicians. Nevertheless, he stressed the importance of intergenerational unity, suggesting that both the older and younger generations have roles to play in securing a political victory. With around six million young voters potentially up for grabs in 2027, Wamalwa is keen to bring them on board, ensuring their influence is harnessed effectively to shift the country’s political direction.
In conclusion, Wamalwa’s message is clear: the youth must unite with all political forces to avoid a fragmented opposition and increase the chances of defeating Ruto in 2027.
