Five suspects linked to the murder of Molo-based activist Richard Otieno have pleaded not guilty before the Nakuru High Court. The accused Peter Okech, Joseph Kihara, Evans Aseka, Geoffrey Ndung’u, and Stephen Masheti appeared before Lady Justice Patricia Gichohi and denied involvement in the gruesome killing. They will remain in police custody until March 27, when the court will issue directions on their bond and bail application.
Otieno was murdered outside his gate in Elburgon Town on January 18, 2025, in an attack that shocked the local community. Investigators believe the killing was well-orchestrated, with multiple suspects playing different roles in the crime. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has identified Geoffrey Mavado, John Ndegwa, and Jorim Ngonga Sura as the prime suspects who allegedly executed the murder.
Authorities further revealed that Mavado and Ndegwa had a history of violence against Otieno, having previously been arrested and charged on November 8, 2024, for assaulting the deceased. Their prior criminal records have intensified scrutiny on their involvement in the activist’s killing.
Additionally, boda boda operators Clinton Simantu, alias Muiruri, and Peter Mwaniki, alias Pinchez, were arrested for allegedly ferrying the assailants to and from the crime scene. Investigators believe they played a crucial role in the logistics of the attack, making them key figures in the ongoing murder probe.
Otieno was a well-known activist in Molo, advocating for social justice and human rights. His work had reportedly put him at odds with some powerful individuals, raising suspicions that his murder may have been a targeted attack. His death sparked outrage among local residents and human rights groups, who have called for a thorough investigation and justice for his family.
As the case unfolds, the court proceedings will determine the fate of the accused, while the prosecution is expected to present evidence linking them to the murder. The hearing on March 27 will be crucial in deciding whether the suspects will be released on bail or remain in custody as investigations continue.
