Wafula Chebukati, the former Chairperson of Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), passed away on February 20, 2025, after a prolonged illness. His tenure at the IEBC, from January 2017 to January 2023, was marked by significant electoral events that shaped Kenya’s political landscape.
Born on December 22, 1961, Chebukati pursued a law degree at the University of Nairobi. Before his appointment to the IEBC, he had a successful legal career, running his own law firm for two decades and later founding Cootow & Associates Advocates in 2006. He also ventured into politics, contesting the Saboti Constituency parliamentary seat in 2007 under the Orange Democratic Movement, where he finished second.
During his six-year tenure as IEBC Chairperson, Chebukati oversaw three major elections: the 2017 general election, the subsequent October 2017 presidential rerun, and the 2022 general election. His leadership during these periods was both lauded and criticized, reflecting the contentious nature of Kenya’s electoral politics. Notably, he became the first IEBC Chairperson to complete the full constitutional term, retiring on January 17, 2023.
In April 2024, Chebukati’s health became a subject of public concern when he was transferred from Nairobi Hospital to Aga Khan University Hospital for treatment of an undisclosed illness. Despite the challenges, he remained resilient, celebrating his 62nd birthday on December 23, 2023, surrounded by family and friends.
Chebukati’s death marks the end of a significant chapter in Kenya’s electoral history. His contributions to the country’s democratic processes, amidst numerous challenges, have left an indelible mark. As the nation reflects on his legacy, discussions about the future of electoral leadership and reforms in Kenya are likely to continue.
