Wajir County police arrested four suspected drug traffickers on Friday after intercepting a vehicle carrying 10 kilograms of marijuana. The suspects were apprehended in Wajir North as they traveled in a Toyota Land Cruiser, registration number KAE 514G.
The arrested individuals have been identified as driver Jibril Ali Noor, 38, car owner Mohammed Abdikadir Mohammud, 30, Adan Ali Abdullahi, 21, and Idow Abdirahaman Adow, 70. Law enforcement officers believe that the suspects had already distributed more bales of marijuana across the county before their arrest.
According to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on X (formerly Twitter), the operation was based on intelligence reports that led the officers to intercept the vehicle.
“It is believed that the four were making their way back home having distributed more bales around the county,” the DCI reported.
The suspects were taken to Bute Police Station, where they are currently being held pending further investigation. They are expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, February 17.
The arrest highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to curb the distribution of illegal drugs in Wajir and across Kenya. The northeastern region has seen an increase in the smuggling of narcotics, often transported through porous borders and remote routes.
Authorities have intensified crackdowns on drug networks, with increased surveillance and roadblocks to intercept traffickers. The National Police Service, working closely with the DCI and local administration, continues to monitor suspected drug routes in an effort to dismantle supply chains.
Under Kenyan law, drug trafficking carries heavy penalties. The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act prescribes long prison sentences and hefty fines for those found guilty of possession, trafficking, or distribution of illegal substances. If convicted, the four suspects could face significant jail time and financial penalties.
The latest arrest in Wajir sends a strong message that authorities remain vigilant in their fight against drug-related crimes. Police have urged residents to report any suspicious activities in their communities to help in the war against narcotics.
As the suspects await their court appearance on Monday, security agencies are expected to continue their investigations to establish the full extent of the drug network involved.
