The incident, which occurred on March 21, 2025, in Nyabisimba, Nyamira County, has sparked national concern over forced traditional practices and gender-based violence. The victim, who had been married to the deceased for over nine years before their separation, had reportedly lost touch with him for years. However, following his tragic demise in a road accident, she was contacted by her mother-in-law and urged to bring their children to attend the funeral.
Upon arrival at the burial, the woman was confronted by her in-laws, who insisted that she partake in the traditional custom of throwing soil into the grave. When she refused, she was allegedly subjected to a violent attack, with accusations that she was responsible for her ex-husband’s death. The brutal assault left her with multiple injuries, prompting authorities to intervene.
Following reports of the attack, three suspects were initially arrested and detained at Kiambere Police Station. They were later arraigned in court, with authorities obtaining court orders to detain them as investigations continued. The latest arrests bring the total number of suspects in custody to seven, with police actively pursuing additional individuals involved in the incident.
