Authorities are intensifying investigations following the brutal murder of a patient at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi. The deceased, identified as 39-year-old Gilbert Kinyua, was found dead in his hospital bed in Ward 7B on the morning of Friday, February 7, with his neck slit.
Kinyua had been admitted to the facility on December 11, 2024, due to a cerebral disorder. Officials confirmed that another patient in the ward, suffering from a similar condition, was present at the time but was too weak to provide details about the incident. He is currently considered a possible suspect in the ongoing investigation.
A nurse on duty conducted a routine check at 3 a.m. on the fateful night and reported that everything appeared normal. However, upon returning later, she discovered Kinyua’s lifeless body with blood splattered around the room. Hospital officials immediately contacted the police, who launched an investigation into the incident.
Detectives from the homicide investigations bureau took over the case, uncovering a crucial piece of evidence a blood-stained kitchen knife that had been thrown onto the ground floor through a window near the scene of the crime. Authorities are working to determine how the weapon ended up there and who was responsible for the attack.
The ongoing investigation has faced challenges, particularly with KNH’s main CCTV cameras being non-functional at the time of the murder. However, detectives have retrieved footage from other cameras in surrounding areas and are reconstructing the events leading up to the killing.
Several key individuals have been interrogated, including patients in neighboring wards, hospital management, and Kinyua’s family. While the motive behind the murder remains unclear, law enforcement officials continue to piece together information to establish a lead.
In response to the tragic event, KNH issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a patient within their facility. Acting CEO Dr. William Sigilai assured the public that the hospital is cooperating fully with authorities and has launched an internal investigation. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the patient’s family during this difficult time. The hospital remains committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all,” Sigilai stated.
As investigations continue, the focus remains on identifying the assailant and preventing similar incidents in the future. Authorities urge anyone with relevant information to come forward to aid in solving the mystery behind Kinyua’s untimely death.
