Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa and Nyandarua Senator Methu Muhia have been removed from their leadership positions in the Senate, a move widely seen as retaliation for their political allegiance to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Both senators confirmed their ouster on Thursday, with Methu Muhia being stripped of his role as Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Lands, Environment, and Natural Resources, while Karungo wa Thang’wa lost his position as Chair of the Roads, Transport, and Housing Committee.
Their removal follows months of political tension between President William Ruto and his former deputy, Gachagua, whose impeachment marked a turning point in the country’s political landscape. The two senators, known for their loyalty to Gachagua, believe their removal is politically motivated.
Senator Methu expressed no regrets over his political stance, stating that he stood by his decisions. “The political choice I have consciously made contributes to the stripping, but I bow out with absolutely no regrets,” he posted on his social media platforms. Despite his removal, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in the leadership role.
Karungo wa Thang’wa echoed similar sentiments, saying he had expected the purge and remained steadfast in his political journey. “I knew it would happen! I expected it! The purge has been effected. I take it like a man and vow to soldier on, unbowed,” he stated.
Despite their removal, both leaders maintained a diplomatic tone, thanking President Ruto and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) for allowing them to serve in leadership roles. Senator Methu specifically acknowledged his tenure in the committee, emphasizing his commitment to service.
The removal of these senators signals the continued restructuring within Kenya’s political sphere, particularly within the ruling UDA party. It highlights the challenges facing leaders aligned with the former deputy president as President Ruto consolidates power and redefines political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
With the growing political rifts, the fate of Gachagua’s allies remains uncertain as they navigate an increasingly turbulent political environment. Whether they will continue to hold influence within the Senate or face further marginalization remains to be seen.
