Impeached former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has boldly declared his intention to vie for the presidency in 2027, expressing confidence in securing a landslide victory. Speaking in an interview on Weru TV, Gachagua emphasized that despite his impeachment, he has not exhausted all legal avenues, and he is ready to challenge the decision all the way to the Supreme Court.
According to Gachagua, the Kenyan Constitution allows anyone who has not exhausted their legal recourse to vie for any public office. He revealed that his legal battle is far from over, stating that the case will proceed through the High Court, Court of Appeal, and potentially the Supreme Court. “Before it is concluded at the Supreme Court, Rigathi Gachagua will vie for the presidency and he will win with so many votes,” he confidently asserted.
Gachagua, who served as Deputy President under President William Ruto, also acknowledged the strong competition in the 2027 race. He noted that several prominent opposition figures, including Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, and Eugene Wamalwa, are also eyeing the presidency. Despite the competition, Gachagua remains optimistic, stating that all candidates will focus on mobilizing support, and eventually, the opposition coalition will rally behind a single candidate.
In a display of political maturity, Gachagua expressed his willingness to support whichever candidate the opposition settles on, even if that candidate is not him. “Even if it is not me, I will support whoever we agree on,” he added.
Gachagua’s plans also include launching his own political party in May, which he believes will give him the platform to spearhead the change he envisions for Kenya. He also took a swipe at the MPs who voted for his impeachment, saying that he was removed not by the people, but by those who did not elect him. Despite this setback, Gachagua remains resolute, positioning himself as a leader dedicated to “saving Kenya” from the current political challenges.
As the 2027 election draws nearer, Gachagua’s bold assertions and plans will undoubtedly make him a key figure to watch in the country’s political landscape.
