Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua joined the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Nairobi Diocese for the consecration and enthronement of The Venerable Canon Jonathan Kabiru as the 3rd Bishop of Nairobi. The ceremony was held at ACK St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Nairobi, which has served as the diocese’s seat since 2002.
Canon Kabiru was elected as the new bishop on January 18, 2025, during official Electoral College proceedings. The event was presided over by Jackson Ole Sapit, the 6th Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya. The newly consecrated bishop succeeds in leading a diocese that plays a pivotal role in the spiritual and social welfare of the Anglican faithful in Nairobi.
Gachagua, who attended the event alongside several Nairobi County MPs allied to him, took to social media to acknowledge the occasion. “Consecration and enthronement of the 3rd Bishop of ACK Nairobi Diocese, Ven. Canon Jonathan Kabiru, Makadara Constituency, Nairobi County,” he posted on Facebook. His presence at the ceremony also fueled speculation that he would use the platform to discuss his ongoing political consultations and ambitions for the 2027 elections.
At 48 years old, Bishop Kabiru brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Prior to his election, he served as the Vicar of ACK St. Gertrude Kasarani and the Archdeacon of Kasarani Archdeaconry. With over 22 years of ministerial experience, he has been deeply involved in church administration, mission and evangelism, corporate governance, and leadership development within the diocese.
Bishop Kabiru is an academic and a researcher, contributing to studies on urban missions and church leadership. He holds a Master of Arts in Religious Studies from Kenyatta University, a Bachelor of Theology from Kenya Methodist University, and a Diploma in Theology and Development from St. Paul’s University. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Organization Development at Cebu Doctors’ University in the Philippines.
Married to Faith Kabiru, the new bishop is also a family man, blessed with three children. His leadership is expected to further strengthen the Anglican Church’s mission in Nairobi and beyond.
