Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday offered his condolences to a family that tragically lost six members in a devastating road crash along the Naivasha–Mai Mahiu road. The accident, which occurred on April 8, resulted in the death of seven people, including three brothers, three children, and the son of their household worker, as they returned from a relative’s funeral.
Unable to attend the funeral in person due to fears of being attacked by hired goons, Gachagua made a heartfelt phone call to the family, which was broadcast to mourners via Naivasha MP Jane Kihara’s phone. In his message, Gachagua expressed deep sympathy for the family’s loss, particularly the financial burden they now face, including the responsibility of paying school fees for the children left behind.
“I understand the pain the family is going through, especially with the burden of school fees for the children left behind. I will send Jane Kihara with Sh200,000 to assist,” Gachagua said, pledging his support during this difficult time.
Despite his absence, Gachagua’s message resonated with many, as he also touched on the growing atmosphere of fear and intimidation. “We have a big problem—goons are being sent to attack us even in churches,” he added, emphasizing the challenges he and others in leadership face due to rising political tensions.
Gachagua’s comments reflect a broader concern over the safety of public figures, as intimidation and violence are becoming increasingly commonplace. The former Deputy President’s remarks resonated with many of the mourners, who understood the risks involved in expressing political views amid such an environment.
Several senior government officials, including MPs John Kiragu (Limuru), Martha Wangari (Gilgil), and Liza Chelule (Nakuru Woman Representative), attended the funeral service. The government also pledged full support for the family, covering all funeral and mortuary expenses. Despite the somber occasion, the tragic event served as a reminder of the deep emotional and financial toll such devastating losses can have on families.
