Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has officially announced his departure from President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), citing regrets over the decision to contest the 2022 elections under a party that was not their own. Speaking in an interview on Sunday night, Gachagua emphasized that the Mount Kenya region would never again enter an election without a party dedicated to its interests.
“Our people are regretting that we went to the last election without our own party,” he stated. “Never again will the region go to an election without a party. This will never happen again, come rain come sunshine.”
Gachagua, who was impeached last October, has been actively reorganizing his political base. His Wamunyoro residence has become a hub of political activity, with several politicians visiting to seek his endorsement as they prepare for the 2027 general elections. While he has not disclosed specific details, he confirmed that he has already formed a new political party, which is in the process of being strengthened to better represent the region’s interests.
The former Mathira MP also issued an apology to the Mount Kenya electorate for leading them into supporting President Ruto in the last election. “Please forgive me. People go wrong,” he admitted, adding that even the clergy had been convinced to back Ruto at the time.
Since his impeachment, Gachagua has been working to consolidate his influence in the Mount Kenya region, which has grown increasingly unsettled following his removal from office. His political allies have confirmed that plans to unveil the new party are in their final stages, signaling his intent to regain a strong foothold in national politics.
With the 2027 elections fast approaching, Gachagua’s move is poised to shake up Kenya’s political landscape. His departure from UDA comes amid growing dissatisfaction among leaders from Mount Kenya, who feel sidelined in national affairs. By establishing a new party, Gachagua aims to provide a political vehicle that prioritizes the region’s interests and ensures greater autonomy in decision-making.
As the political realignments unfold, all eyes will be on Gachagua’s next steps, particularly how he maneuvers to consolidate his base and rally support ahead of the next elections. His ability to galvanize Mount Kenya behind his new political outfit will determine whether he remains a key player in Kenya’s evolving political scene.
