Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed that he will delay the announcement of his new political party until May 2025, citing fears of sabotage. Speaking at a political gathering, Gachagua emphasized that the decision was strategic and meant to counter efforts to divide the Mt. Kenya region.
“For strategic reasons, I will not announce the party today. I will announce in May,” Gachagua stated, adding that the launch will be a grand and colorful event.
Gachagua warned of a scheme to introduce multiple political parties in the region to create confusion ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to him, some of these parties are being deliberately sponsored to field presidential candidates to weaken the unity of the region.
“We have seen this before. In 1992, there was Matiba and Kibaki, and Moi won. We are doing everything to identify such parties and tell our people which presidential candidates have been planted,” he explained.
In a significant political move, Gachagua recently visited former presidential candidate Martha Karua at her home in Gichugu. He described Karua as a strong defender of the region and emphasized the need for unity to strengthen their political base.
“I have realized I can’t win this political battle alone. That is why I went to see Karua. She welcomed us warmly, and we will be there during the relaunch of her party,” he stated.
Gachagua further disclosed that regional elders had instructed him to spearhead unity efforts within Mt. Kenya. His alliance with Karua signals an attempt to consolidate political influence and counter external interference.
Gachagua also hinted at his imminent departure from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), stating that he had already been removed from his former position within the party. Although he has not made an official exit, he confirmed that the process is underway.
Regarding the identity of his new party, he provided some details but left many questions unanswered. “Our party has no color yellow. It has no wheelbarrow symbol,” he teased, hinting at a departure from UDA’s branding.
As political realignments take shape ahead of the next election, Gachagua’s moves will be closely watched, especially his role in shaping the political landscape of the Mt. Kenya region.
