Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has retreated to Nairobi as President William Ruto embarks on a five-day tour of the Mt Kenya region. The two leaders, once closely aligned, have found themselves on divergent paths following Gachagua’s ouster from the Deputy Presidency in 2024.
Ruto arrived in Sagana State Lodge, Nyeri County, on Monday, while Gachagua was spotted in Wangige Market, Kiambu, just hours later. Sources indicate that Gachagua has strategically chosen not to accompany Ruto in the Mt Kenya tour. Instead, he will hold public events across Nairobi, Kajiado, and Machakos over the next few days, maintaining a low profile to avoid clashes with security forces and critics monitoring his movements.
As the former DP becomes increasingly vocal in his criticism of the government, insiders revealed that Gachagua plans to take advantage of the five-day window to respond to some of Ruto’s claims. His ally, Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, described the former Deputy President’s schedule as “active but well-guarded,” emphasizing that Gachagua’s activities would include impromptu visits to select regions.
Gachagua’s recent political maneuvers signal his preparations for launching his own political party in May. To facilitate his interactions with supporters, Gachagua has vacated his Wamunyoro residence and moved to his Nairobi home. The relocation also comes as a precaution to avoid confrontations with security personnel, particularly in Mt Kenya, where heightened security and roadblocks have been set up during Ruto’s stay at Sagana.
Ruto, meanwhile, defended his six-month absence from the Mt Kenya region, asserting that his development record speaks for itself. The President highlighted key achievements, including electricity expansion, affordable housing, and market development. His visit aims to present these accomplishments and reassure the region that he is committed to fulfilling his promises despite criticism.
The political dynamics between Ruto and Gachagua continue to unfold as both leaders navigate their positions within the political landscape of Mt Kenya.
