Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a stern warning to Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Charles Kahariri, cautioning him against delving into political matters. Speaking at the Redeemed Gospel Church in Naivasha, Gachagua insisted that the Kenyan military must remain apolitical to uphold its professional integrity and public trust.
Gachagua’s remarks come in response to recent comments made by Kahariri regarding the ongoing ‘Ruto Must Go’ protests. The former DP emphasized that the chants are not a call for unconstitutional action but rather a reflection of democratic expression ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
“Do not bring politics into the military, and for your information, when people chant ‘Ruto Must Go,’ it is not about removing the President through illegal means. It is a clarion call in preparation for the General Elections. Ruto will be removed from office through constitutional means in August 2027,” Gachagua stated.
Kenyans have been actively engaging in anti-Ruto demonstrations, both online and on the streets, voicing their dissatisfaction with the Kenya Kwanza administration. The protests have also found their way into public gatherings, including rallies attended by President William Ruto himself.
On Thursday, General Kahariri addressed the matter, urging Kenyans to ensure that any political change occurs through lawful and constitutional means. He reiterated that the military is committed to defending the Constitution and the government elected by the people.
“We, as the military, defend the Constitution and the government of the day, duly elected by the people. So when you decide that you are tired of the government you elected and then you start chanting ‘Must Go, Must Go,’ that ‘Must Go’ must be done according to the Constitution,” Kahariri stated.
The KDF chief also clarified that the military’s deployment during protests is part of its mandate to maintain national security and defend the Republic. However, his comments have sparked debate, with some politicians accusing him of overstepping his role.
As political temperatures continue to rise ahead of the 2027 elections, the ‘Ruto Must Go’ movement is expected to remain a focal point of Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
