Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has reaffirmed his commitment to involving young people in leadership, announcing that his deputy party leader will be a member of Generation Z. Speaking during a media roundtable with Kamba-speaking radio stations on Wednesday, Gachagua emphasized the importance of including young voices in governance.
Gachagua, who has been making political moves to solidify his influence, underscored that his new party would prioritize youth engagement at all levels. He argued that the time for merely telling young people they are the leaders of tomorrow is over. Instead, he insisted they must take up leadership roles today.
“My party will involve them (Gen Z) to a very large extent at the position of deputy party leader. I’m the party leader; my deputy will be a Gen Z so that we involve them. We don’t just tell them they are the leaders of tomorrow. They are the leaders of today,” Gachagua stated.
The former DP believes that his experience, combined with the innovation and creativity of young leaders, will create a dynamic leadership approach for Kenya. He expressed a strong desire to mentor the youth, helping them navigate political leadership while leveraging their fresh ideas.
Gachagua also recalled his vocal support for young people during the recent anti-government protests led by Gen Z. He maintained that he suffered significant political consequences for siding with them but remains steadfast in his conviction.
“The day it mattered most, I spoke for them, I stood for them. I am on record. I am not speaking for Gen Z because I left office. I spoke when I was in office and they believe in me,” he said.
He reiterated that Gen Z trusts him because he stood up for their rights at a crucial moment. According to Gachagua, his support for young people led to his political persecution, but he remains committed to their cause.
Gachagua’s latest political engagements have seen him seek alliances with key opposition figures. He has already held meetings with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, and DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa, among others. Additionally, he has been consulting professionals, former elected officials, and other influential figures.
His strategic moves indicate a broader plan to establish himself as a formidable political force ahead of the next general election. With a keen focus on youth inclusion, Gachagua is positioning himself as a leader who understands and supports the aspirations of Kenya’s younger generation.
