Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a passionate appeal to Kenya’s younger generation, urging them to continue their online activism but to take the next step in making tangible political change. Speaking during an event in Kakamega on Sunday, Gachagua emphasized the crucial role that Gen Z and Millennials play in shaping the future of the country, but also stressed that their social media presence alone would not be enough to create lasting change.
“Let me tell our young people, the Gen Zs and the Millennials, what you are doing in social media is very good but it’s not enough,” Gachagua said, acknowledging the power of online platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok in calling out government inefficiencies and holding leaders accountable. The younger generation’s vocal demands for transparency and change have been an undeniable force in recent years, particularly through the advocacy for social justice, accountability, and government reform.
However, Gachagua urged the youth to go beyond online activism and register as voters ahead of the 2027 general elections. He pointed out that while their efforts in the online space were commendable, real change could only come if they actively participated in the democratic process.
“Much as they are doing a very good job on social media, on the X space and Tiktok, that is only a certain percentage but the real job to liberate this country and bring good governance will take place in August 2027,” he stated, highlighting the importance of youth engagement in the upcoming elections.
Gachagua also acknowledged the role of social media in catalyzing political change, referencing how the youth-led movement had already influenced significant political outcomes. Their collective action played a pivotal role in forcing President William Ruto to meet with young people on X, discuss the country’s direction, and even led to notable policy shifts, such as the shelving of the Finance Bill 2024 and the reshuffling of the Cabinet.
“These young people because they have shown patriotism and commitment to liberate our country through the power of the online space, I want to plead with them to go a step further to register as voters,” Gachagua continued, underscoring that youth participation in elections is essential for transforming the country’s leadership and ensuring good governance.
With the 2027 elections approaching, Gachagua’s call for greater youth involvement in the electoral process reflects a growing recognition of the power of Kenya’s younger population. Gen Z and Millennials have proven they are not afraid to challenge the status quo; now, they have the opportunity to turn their activism into political action and play a pivotal role in the future of their nation.
