The government has moved swiftly to contain the recent wave of abductions that have unsettled the country, Interior Principal Secretary (PS) Raymond Omollo has assured Kenyans. Speaking during a media interview, Omollo described the incidents as a “mixed bag” of criminal activities, urging citizens to cooperate with security agencies in maintaining peace and order.
“Abduction matters involve criminal elements, but we have a responsibility to contain them,” Omollo stated. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between security forces and the public, given that Kenya has only 110,000 security officers for a population of 55 million.
Shakahola Victims’ Families Still Waiting
Omollo also addressed the delay in handing over the remains of victims of the Shakahola massacre to their families. He attributed the delay to challenges in identifying decomposed bodies and the failure of some relatives to show up for DNA analysis.
“There are still many bodies that have not been identified because relatives have not yet come forward for DNA analysis. It is not an easy process,” he explained.
Omollo noted that the Shakahola tragedy remains an open case, as legal proceedings are ongoing. “Since most lives were lost and the case is still in court, we cannot conclusively close that chapter for now,” he said.
Kisii-Narok Clashes Under Control
Regarding the ongoing clashes along the Kisii-Narok border, Omollo confirmed that several suspects have been arrested as authorities continue peace negotiations. He likened the situation to previous conflicts in Tana River and other hotspots, vowing that all perpetrators will face justice.
“The clashes are being addressed, and we have already apprehended several individuals as investigations continue,” he assured.
Kenya’s Peace Mission in Haiti
On the international front, Omollo reiterated Kenya’s commitment to leading the peacekeeping mission in Haiti. He explained that the deployment follows a special request from the United Nations, aimed at restoring order in the troubled Caribbean nation.
Kenya remains steadfast in its dedication to domestic and international security, Omollo affirmed, urging citizens to play an active role in ensuring national stability.
