The government has intensified efforts to combat drug and substance abuse in Kirinyaga County, focusing on community-driven interventions, public education, and enforcement measures. Speaking on the second day of the Public Sensitization on Drug and Substance Abuse, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, emphasized the importance of collaborative action in addressing this growing challenge.
“The Government is committed to tackling the rising prevalence of drug and substance abuse, especially among the youth, through collaboration and strategic interventions,” PS Muthoni stated.
She underscored the urgency of the fight against substance abuse, highlighting its devastating effects on young people. “We cannot afford to lose our young people to drugs and substance abuse. Through community-driven approaches, education, and strong enforcement, we are working to create a safer, healthier future for all Kenyans. This fight requires collective responsibility, and we urge every stakeholder to play their part,” she added.
The sensitization program in Kirinyaga County has brought together key stakeholders, including the National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) and Community Health Promoters, to enhance the national response to substance abuse. These efforts align with Kenya’s broader initiatives to improve public health and promote healthier lifestyles.
As part of the initiative, PS Muthoni emphasized the role of public education in prevention and recovery. “This training is an opportunity to equip our communities with the knowledge and tools needed to prevent substance abuse and promote healthier lifestyles. We will also inform on the Social Health Authority and the available benefits for those with mental health issues and those recovering from drug and substance abuse,” she said.
The government’s approach combines awareness creation, treatment programs, and law enforcement to tackle substance abuse comprehensively. By engaging local leaders, health professionals, and law enforcement agencies, authorities aim to create sustainable solutions that protect young people and enhance community well-being.
The initiative in Kirinyaga County serves as a model for other regions, reinforcing the government’s commitment to safeguarding the nation’s future through proactive and inclusive measures in the fight against drug and substance abuse.
