Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has addressed the growing speculation about his presence during President William Ruto’s recent tour of Kieni, part of his one-week Mt Kenya tour. Kahiga’s participation in welcoming the president, alongside shared images of cordial exchanges between the two, raised eyebrows given his political alignment with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, a known critic of President Ruto’s leadership.
In a statement responding to the buzz generated online, Governor Kahiga sought to clarify his position, emphasizing the need for respect towards the presidency. “Do not read too much into this photo and others shared all over. The Presidency must be respected,” he stated. He explained that his actions should be viewed through the lens of his role as a public servant, noting that his duty is to respect and support the office of the president, irrespective of political affiliations.
The photos of Kahiga receiving President Ruto’s entourage, especially in light of his ties to Gachagua, sparked discussions about potential shifts in political alliances within Mt Kenya. Kahiga has been a vocal supporter of Gachagua, whose opposition to Ruto’s leadership has been well-documented. However, the governor maintained that attending the president’s events did not imply a shift in his loyalty but rather a professional obligation to honor the office he holds.
In his statement, Kahiga went further to reassure his critics that he would continue to welcome President Ruto during his visits to Nyeri Town and Othaya Constituencies on Saturday. “The Governor of Nyeri received the President of The Republic of Kenya in Nyeri, Kieni Constituency. The Governor of Nyeri will still receive The President of The Republic of Kenya on Saturday in both Nyeri Town and Othaya Constituencies,” he affirmed, underscoring that political differences should not overshadow national duties.
This response highlights Kahiga’s commitment to separating political rivalry from his responsibilities as governor, affirming that the presidency, as an institution, commands the respect of all Kenyans regardless of their political affiliations.
