Narok Governor Patrick ole Ntutu has called for an immediate and comprehensive investigation into a deadly incident in Ang’ata Barrikoi, Trans Mara, where five people, including a seven-year-old child, lost their lives following a violent confrontation between locals and police officers on Sunday, April 28.
The tragedy, which also left several others injured, reportedly stemmed from a long-standing land dispute between residents of the Angata and Moyoi adjudication sections. Tensions boiled over when police moved to disperse demonstrators protesting the alleged grabbing of 10,000 acres of land by a senior government official. The confrontation quickly turned deadly, with residents accusing security personnel of excessive force.
Governor Ntutu, who visited the affected area shortly after the incident, expressed profound sorrow at the loss of life and announced that the Narok County Government would cater for the funeral expenses of all six victims, including the child, and cover medical bills for those injured.
“It is deeply regrettable that longstanding land disputes have escalated to such a tragic outcome, particularly at a time when we were nearing the resolution of the conflict,” Ntutu said, referencing over a year of mediation led by his administration.
He further stated that he had engaged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to launch a full and impartial investigation, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice. IPOA is expected to begin investigations immediately.
The governor’s visit was accompanied by Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ngeno, Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia, and County Police Commander Ngare. During the meeting, community members reiterated their demands for justice and transparency, as security forces maintained a visible presence in the area to prevent further violence.
“The incident is a devastating blow to a community on the verge of achieving lasting peace,” Ntutu remarked, urging calm while the investigation takes its course.
The atmosphere in Ang’ata Barrikoi remains tense but calm, with residents mourning the loss and awaiting answers. The incident has reignited calls for swift and fair resolution of land conflicts in the region.
