Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has intensified efforts to improve the county’s road infrastructure and address flooding concerns through a strategic road rehabilitation initiative. The county has commissioned a newly established jaw stone crusher at the Gatongora quarry, which will supply hardcore chipping materials for road and bridge upgrades across Kiambu.
The crusher, which converts rock boulders into thousands of tonnes of chipping materials, provides a cost-effective and sustainable solution for road construction. To enhance accountability in the transportation of materials, the county government has installed a weighbridge at the quarry to monitor the weight of loaded trucks and regulate the number of lorries leaving the site.
“We have established a foolproof system that checks the weight of loaded trucks and records details of each vehicle to ensure maximum accountability. Additionally, we will install solar lighting at the quarry to create an optimal work environment,” said Governor Wamatangi.
As part of the county’s infrastructure development plan, road construction works have commenced for the Corner-Mutonya road and the Karuguru-Machinani bridge. These projects are expected to enhance accessibility and connectivity within the county.
Addressing perennial flooding issues, the county has also launched drainage improvement projects in flood-prone areas. Residents of OJ Medix-BTL-Sweetwater-Membley Road in Ruiru will soon benefit from the installation of culverts designed to mitigate seasonal flooding. The move has been welcomed by locals, who have endured years of impassable roads during rainy seasons.
“We hire gumboots for Ksh10-30 when the river breaks its banks during the rainy season. We appreciate the County Government of Kiambu for installing culverts and carrying out construction works, which will avert this recurring problem,” said Joyce Wamuyu, a local resident.
The county plans to install hundreds of culverts across Kiambu, prioritizing areas most affected by flooding. These projects mark a significant step toward improving road infrastructure and ensuring safer, more accessible routes for residents and businesses.
Governor Wamatangi’s initiative underscores his commitment to sustainable infrastructure development and flood mitigation. With the use of local resources, strict accountability measures, and a focus on high-impact projects, Kiambu residents can look forward to improved road networks and better resilience against seasonal flooding.
