Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has rejected claims by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that his life is in danger following the alleged withdrawal of his security detail. In a letter dated April 15, 2025, Gachagua accused the police of orchestrating a plot to expose him to danger through calculated security lapses.
Gachagua claimed that multiple attempts have been made on his life since his removal from office in October 2024. He alleged that the Inspector General was colluding with criminal gangs to harm him, and accused the National Intelligence Service (NIS) of stalking his family in unmarked vehicles a move he described as a gross violation of privacy.
He further recounted several incidents that he termed assassination attempts, including an attack during a funeral service in Limuru in November 2024, and another incident in Nyandarua in December where police officers allegedly disrupted his supporters using teargas.
In response, IG Kanja, through National Police Service (NPS) Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, dismissed Gachagua’s accusations, calling them baseless and reaffirming the police service’s commitment to impartiality and the rule of law.
“The attention of the National Police Service has been drawn to a letter allegedly authored by Hon. Rigathi Gachagua. The Service wishes to reaffirm its role in promoting and safeguarding national security for all Kenyans, residents, and visitors,” the statement read.
The NPS emphasized that the country’s security remains stable, with officers alert to any criminal threats. The police urged Gachagua to liaise directly with local security officers for any special protection needs and to inform them in advance about his movements or public engagements to allow for adequate planning.
“Hon. Gachagua is advised to liaise with police officers for any additional security arrangements,” the statement concluded.
As political tensions simmer, the back-and-forth between Gachagua and the police signals a deepening rift between the former deputy president and the current security establishment — one that continues to capture national attention.
