The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has initiated investigations into an alleged incident of police brutality in Narok County, following the circulation of distressing images on social media. The images reportedly show injuries sustained by a woman, which are alleged to have been inflicted by a police officer.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, IPOA confirmed that it had already reached out to the affected family on Monday, April 21. According to preliminary findings from its Rapid Response team, the woman is currently undergoing treatment at Narok Level 5 Hospital.
“The Authority is committed to conducting the investigation independently and impartially,” the statement read. IPOA emphasized that it would make appropriate recommendations should any officer be found culpable of violating the law.
Chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan reaffirmed IPOA’s dedication to police accountability and professionalism. “IPOA remains committed to conducting the investigation with impartiality, as it delivers its mandate of holding the police accountable,” he stated.
Established under Cap 86 of the Laws of Kenya, IPOA plays a crucial role in monitoring police conduct and investigating complaints from the public. The Authority has increasingly become a central institution in efforts to curb police misconduct and ensure justice for victims of abuse.
IPOA also issued a call to members of the public, urging anyone with information relevant to the case to come forward and assist in the investigations. “Public cooperation is vital in helping the Authority uncover the truth and ensure justice is served,” the statement added.
The alleged assault has stirred public outrage online, with many Kenyans demanding swift action and justice for the victim. The case adds to a growing list of incidents where police officers have been accused of using excessive force, raising concerns over the need for deeper reforms within the National Police Service.
As the investigation progresses, all eyes will be on IPOA to deliver a thorough and transparent inquiry that will not only bring justice in this particular case but also reinforce the importance of accountability within the ranks of Kenya’s police force.
