The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into a fatal police shooting in Nairobi’s Majengo area that resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left three others seriously injured. The incident, which took place on the night of March 4, 2025, near Majengo Social Hall, involved officers from Shauri Moyo Police Station who were attempting to arrest a young suspect.
According to IPOA, the attempted arrest drew the attention of local youths, escalating into chaos. During the confrontation, a young man, estimated to be between 17 and 20 years old, was shot and critically wounded. He later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.
The tragic death of the young man sparked demonstrations in Majengo on March 5, 2025, as residents took to the streets to express their outrage. The protests led to further injuries, affecting both civilians and police officers. Additionally, extensive property damage was reported, including destruction to government buildings and motor vehicles.
IPOA Chairperson Isaack Hassan confirmed that the authority had already recorded key statements and attended one postmortem examination, with another scheduled for March 6. In a statement, Hassan extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a swift recovery for the injured.
“The Authority sends condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and wishes a quick recovery to all who suffered injuries. IPOA further calls upon citizens not to take the law into their own hands and to refrain from any acts of lawlessness,” Hassan urged.
The oversight body has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring police accountability and transparency in law enforcement operations. Hassan emphasized that officers found guilty of misconduct would face legal consequences.
In a separate development, IPOA has dispatched a team to Kakuma refugee camp to monitor police conduct during ongoing demonstrations. The authority remains vigilant in overseeing law enforcement activities to prevent human rights violations and uphold justice.
As investigations continue, IPOA has urged the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course in seeking justice for the victims of the Majengo shooting.
