Alego Usonga MP Sam Atandi has etched his name in Kenya’s history books by becoming the first legislator from the Nyanza region to chair the National Assembly’s Budget and Appropriations Committee. His unopposed election marks a significant milestone, breaking a long-standing record that has existed since Kenya’s independence in 1963.
Atandi succeeds Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, who chose not to defend the influential seat. In his acceptance speech, Atandi expressed gratitude, attributing his victory to divine intervention and the support of key political figures, including ODM party leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto.
“The President has continued to do things that have confounded many Kenyans,” Atandi remarked, acknowledging the broad-based government that has seen opposition MPs take up senior parliamentary roles. He noted that his election aligns with the President’s commitment to fostering national unity by ensuring a government with a national outlook.
Atandi also highlighted the appointment of John Mbadi as Cabinet Secretary for Finance, another historic moment for Nyanza region politics. “Today we have the Cabinet Secretary for Finance being the Hon John Mbadi. That is a big milestone,” he emphasized.
Reflecting on his journey to the prestigious position, Atandi credited Minority Leader Junet Mohamed for playing a critical role in organizing the opposition side within the National Assembly. “Let me confess, Hon Speaker, that Junet is the one who reorganizes our Azimio side, and for me to sit here, it’s the confidence that Hon Junet has in me that has allowed me to chair this committee,” he stated.
As chair of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, Atandi assumes a crucial role in overseeing the national budget, ensuring equitable allocation of resources, and maintaining fiscal responsibility. He pledged to serve diligently, emphasizing the need for fairness and transparency in budgetary processes.
Atandi’s appointment signifies a shift in Kenya’s political landscape, where inclusivity and representation are increasingly prioritized. His new role is expected to enhance regional balance in governance, reinforcing the idea that leadership positions should reflect Kenya’s diverse communities. His tenure will be closely watched as he embarks on his new responsibilities in shaping the country’s financial future.
