Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has spoken out after facing criticism over remarks he made in Kisii County, insisting that his comments were taken out of context.
Speaking in Marani, Kitutu North Constituency, over the weekend, Jalang’o had recounted witnessing what he described as a “meeting of night runners” outside his lodge. He humorously claimed that during his stay at Marani Simba Lodge, he observed a small group of about 12 individuals whom he jokingly suggested were upset that the area’s electrification had disrupted their traditional night activities.
“I arrived here early and slept at Marani Simba Lodge. I saw a small meeting of about 12 people at night. I decided to listen closely and realized it was a meeting of night runners,” Jalang’o said, adding, “They were complaining that Jafo (Kitutu Chache North MP Japheth Nyakundi) had ruined their work by installing electricity everywhere.”
Although his remarks appeared to be made in jest to highlight Nyakundi’s development achievements, they sparked an uproar among some members of the Kisii community, with many taking to social media to express their outrage and demand an apology.
Responding to the backlash, Jalang’o expressed disappointment over the misinterpretation of his words. He urged Kenyans to watch the full clip of his speech to understand the context and emphasized his respect and love for the Kisii community.
“My heart is heavy seeing my words misquoted. I hold deep love and respect for the Kisii community they are my family, my friends, my people. I would never insult them. Please watch the full clip. Let’s stand for truth, not division,” Jalang’o stated.
He further appealed to Kenyans to prioritize unity and avoid being misled by partial narratives that could cause unnecessary division.
As the controversy unfolds, Jalang’o’s call for understanding highlights the growing sensitivity surrounding public figures’ remarks and the critical role of context in public discourse.
