Juja Member of Parliament (MP) George Koimburi narrowly escaped what his lawyer described as an attempted abduction outside the Kiambu Law Courts on Thursday. The dramatic incident unfolded shortly after Koimburi had attended a court session regarding his failure to appear on multiple occasions.
The MP, who had been released on a Ksh 200,000 cash bail the previous day, was at the court for directions on whether he would take a plea for the charge. After the court session, Koimburi, alongside his legal counsel Ndegwa Njiru, Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, and other officials, addressed the press outside the court premises.
During the press conference, a video captured an official signaling the MP, leading to an abrupt end to the briefing. Koimburi quickly alerted his legal team before hastily leaving the media engagement. As they made their way to his car, a group of men in civilian clothing attempted to grab the MP’s hand. However, his legal team intervened, thwarting the attempt.
Sensing the urgency of the situation, Koimburi and his team changed direction, moving away from the scene. Reports indicate that the MP managed to board a waiting motorbike, which he used to flee the area, effectively avoiding the group of men attempting to seize him.
His lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, condemned the incident, terming it an ‘abduction attempt.’ “My client Hon. Koimburi has narrowly escaped abduction just outside the Kiambu Law Courts,” Njiru stated. The alleged incident has raised concerns regarding the safety of politicians involved in legal battles and ongoing political tensions.
The circumstances surrounding the attempted seizure remain unclear, with authorities yet to provide an official statement. It is not known whether the individuals involved were plainclothes officers or other actors seeking to detain the MP.
Koimburi’s legal troubles continue, as the Kiambu Law Court has scheduled a ruling for February 25 to determine whether different bond terms will be imposed on him. The case has drawn public and political attention, with speculation mounting over the real motives behind the reported abduction attempt.
As investigations unfold, questions linger about the safety of politicians facing legal challenges, the role of law enforcement, and the broader implications for political stability in the country. The unfolding drama around Koimburi’s case will likely remain a point of interest in the coming days, especially as the February 25 ruling approaches.
