Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has stirred the political waters by declaring that the Azimio Coalition effectively ceased to exist after ODM leader Raila Odinga signed a cooperation agreement with President William Ruto. Kalonzo, in a recent statement made on April 3, contended that the moment Raila entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ruto on March 7, 2024, marking a significant departure from Azimio’s original unity, was the end of the coalition.
The MoU, which outlines collaboration between Raila’s ODM and Ruto’s UDA on key national issues, sparked debate across political circles. Raila, however, clarified that the deal was not an indication of ODM joining the government but a framework for engagement on national matters. Despite Raila’s explanation, Kalonzo remained adamant that Azimio’s cohesion was shattered by the deal.
Kalonzo emphasized that his stance was not driven by animosity, asserting, “I will not attack Raila because that’s not in my DNA.” He expressed respect for Raila’s decisions but argued that following the pact, Wiper was the only party still loyal to Azimio, though he conceded that Wiper alone could not sustain the coalition. Kalonzo’s comments reflect his belief that the political landscape had irrevocably shifted, leaving Wiper to chart a new course.
Kalonzo also distanced himself from the ongoing debate within the ODM ranks, where his earlier remarks regarding the selection of new IEBC commissioners were met with strong rebuttal. ODM accused him of dishonesty, particularly concerning his previous role as chairperson of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO), which was instrumental in shaping the process. ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna countered Kalonzo’s accusations, reaffirming that the IEBC selection process was being conducted transparently.
Kalonzo’s remarks were made during the Umoja Summit Party’s Annual Delegates Convention, where the party rebranded as the Democratic National Alliance (DNA). He further rallied his supporters, declaring that the DNA would be part of a winning coalition in the future of Kenya’s politics.
