A tragic shooting incident in Nairobi’s Kawangware area has left the family of Amos Langat in mourning after an autopsy revealed he was shot seven times during a dispute with a police officer. The incident, which occurred on Sunday night, has sparked widespread concern over the conduct of officers assigned as VIP bodyguards.
The autopsy conducted at Chiromo Mortuary confirmed that Langat sustained four gunshot wounds to the stomach and three to the chest. According to his family, the shots were fired at close range, with some of the bullets rupturing his heart. The firearm used in the shooting was a pistol.
Langat’s fatal encounter stemmed from a disagreement over a pool game with Corporal Mohamed Yusuf Keinan, a police officer attached to State House Spokesman Hussein Mohamed. The altercation reportedly escalated outside a local bar before the shooting took place. Witnesses and police sources have corroborated that the suspect, Corporal Keinan, later checked himself into a hospital, citing hand and shoulder injuries.
Following the incident, Keinan returned his pistol, which still had three bullets, to Muthangari Police Station. He remains under police guard in the hospital as investigators await his medical report before determining the next course of action. Officers from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) are actively investigating the case to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Langat’s family is now finalizing arrangements to transport his remains to Bureti, Kericho County, for burial. His brother, Enoch Langat, expressed grief over the brutal manner in which Amos lost his life, calling for justice.
This incident is the latest in a string of violent encounters involving police officers attached to VIPs. In the past month alone, three people, including two police officers, have been killed in similar incidents, while two others have sustained injuries. A separate case on March 9 saw a police officer attached to Parliament fatally shoot a colleague at Gigiri Police Station.
While VIP bodyguards undergo rigorous training, these recurrent incidents raise concerns over their conduct and use of firearms. Authorities continue to investigate and review protocols governing officers in such sensitive roles to prevent further loss of life.
