Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has vowed to challenge her impeachment, calling it a politically motivated sham orchestrated to silence her. Speaking on Tuesday evening, Mwangaza declared that she would explore all legal avenues to clear her name and expose the injustices behind her removal from office.
Mwangaza’s impeachment was upheld by the High Court last Friday, leading to the swearing-in of her former deputy, Isaac Mutuma, as the new governor. Despite the court ruling, Mwangaza remains defiant, stating that her removal was driven by political manipulation rather than legitimate grounds.
“I will not be silenced! I will pursue all legal avenues to clear my name and expose the injustices perpetrated against me,” Mwangaza asserted. She further emphasized that her fight is not only personal but represents every woman striving for leadership in a political landscape that often marginalizes female leaders.
She accused a group of male politicians of orchestrating her ouster, alleging that they were threatened by her unwavering commitment to truth and the welfare of the Meru people. “My impeachment was not based on any legitimate grounds but was a politically motivated scheme. It was orchestrated by predominantly male politicians who manipulated the system to remove me from office,” she stated.
Mwangaza’s removal followed a third impeachment attempt by the Meru County Assembly on August 8, 2024, where 40 out of 69 MCAs supported the motion tabled by Majority Leader Zipporah Kinya. The Senate later upheld the Assembly’s decision, and her subsequent legal challenge was dismissed by Justice Bahati Mwamuye on March 14, 2025, who ruled that due process was followed.
Her impeachment has been met with mixed reactions. While her opponents celebrated the verdict with song and dance across Meru, her supporters decried it as an unjust political witch hunt. Mwangaza also accused the national government of enabling an undemocratic process and interfering with her access to justice.
Despite the setback, the former governor remains resolute. “I will continue to engage with the people of Meru to ensure their voices are heard and their needs are met,” she affirmed, signaling a prolonged legal and political battle ahead.
