Kenya Kwanza leaders have led the nation in mourning the late former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati, who passed away on February 20, 2025. Chebukati, who chaired the electoral body from 2017 to 2023, has been remembered as a guardian of democracy and a defender of electoral integrity.
National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah paid glowing tribute to Chebukati, describing him as a leader of unwavering dedication to free and fair elections.
“His conduct remains a testament to his steadfast leadership and commitment to justice,” Ichung’wah stated. “As a guardian of free and fair elections, Chebukati exemplified courage, impartiality, and an unyielding respect for the will of the people.”
Ichung’wah further noted that Chebukati’s service to the country transcended duty, playing a vital role in ensuring the stability and progress of Kenya’s democracy. He extended condolences to Chebukati’s family, friends, and colleagues, praying for strength during this difficult time.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi also expressed his sorrow, highlighting Chebukati’s diligence and competence in handling Kenya’s electoral process. Kingi, who is also mourning the loss of his father, Mzee Kingi, acknowledged Chebukati’s contribution to the 2022 general election, which saw President William Ruto declared the winner against former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
“Chebukati oversaw fair and transparent elections that have continued to promote the rule of law and good governance in Kenya. May his soul rest in peace,” Kingi posted on X.
Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen echoed similar sentiments, hailing Chebukati as a principled leader with an unwavering commitment to the Constitution.
“A true patriot and a man of immense integrity, Chebukati professionally steered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) through two elections,” Murkomen stated on X. “My thoughts are with his family, friends, the legal fraternity, and the nation at large during this difficult time of profound loss.”
Chebukati’s tenure at the IEBC was marked by critical electoral moments, particularly the contested 2017 and 2022 general elections. Despite challenges and political tensions, he remained steadfast in upholding Kenya’s electoral laws and democratic principles.
As Kenya mourns his passing, many reflect on his contributions to the country’s governance and democratic processes. His legacy as an electoral steward will remain etched in the annals of Kenya’s history. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
