Security forces in Kenya have launched a multi-agency operation in Lamu County after a group of about 100 armed militants raided Mangai village over the weekend. The gunmen, believed to be members of the al-Shabaab terror group, assembled locals, lectured them on extremist ideologies, and distributed dates before leaving the area.
The attack, which took place on Saturday evening, has raised tensions in the village amid fears that the militants may return for a more violent assault. According to security sources, the militants were hooded and armed with AK-47 rifles. They reportedly divided into two groups, with one group monitoring a nearby security camp while the other entered the village.
Witnesses say the gunmen introduced themselves as members of al-Shabaab and warned residents against cooperating with the government. They spent about 30 minutes lecturing villagers on their interpretation of Islam and warned them not to inform authorities about their presence. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Following the raid, security forces, including the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the National Police Service, were deployed to the region to flush out the militants. Officials stated that a large area had already been covered in the ongoing operation. The multi-agency team has also been engaging with villagers to gather intelligence and ensure their safety.
Lamu County has experienced a series of terrorist attacks over the years, particularly in areas near the Kenya-Somalia border. One of the deadliest incidents occurred in June 2014, when over 90 people were killed in coordinated attacks in Mpeketoni and Kibaoni. To combat such threats, the government launched Operation Linda Boni, an initiative aimed at eliminating terrorist hideouts within Boni Forest.
As part of long-term security and development efforts, the government has been investing in infrastructure projects, including the construction of roads, hospitals, and schools, to improve livelihoods and counter radicalization.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and share any information regarding suspicious activities with security agencies. The operation in Lamu continues as security forces work to prevent further attacks and restore stability in the region.
