At least 63 people were rushed to Kiambu Referral Hospital on Saturday, March 29, with symptoms consistent with cholera, raising concerns over a possible outbreak in the area. The affected individuals, including market traders and boda boda riders, reported severe dehydration, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
According to Dr. Japheth Kamau, a lead physician at the hospital, most of the patients exhibited symptoms within hours of consuming food from a popular eatery along Kiambu Road, near a well-known supermarket. “Most patients reported eating at the same food kiosk in the past 48 hours. We’re seeing severe dehydration, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Immediate treatment is critical,” Dr. Kamau stated.
A video obtained by Wananchi Reporting shows patients lined up at the hospital, some visibly in distress, clutching their stomachs and struggling to remain upright. One elderly man was seen barely managing to stand, while a woman sat weakly on a bench with IV drip paraphernalia attached to her hand.
Local health authorities, led by Kiambu Public Health Officer Dr. Japheth Muthoni, have since ordered the immediate closure of the eatery as investigations continue. “We have taken necessary action by closing the premises to prevent further cases while we establish the exact cause of the outbreak,” Dr. Muthoni confirmed.
Residents have been advised to remain vigilant, particularly when consuming street food. “People should ensure their food and water sources are clean and well-handled. Any symptoms of diarrhoea, vomiting, or stomach pain should prompt immediate medical attention,” added Dr. Muthoni.
Health officials fear that the number of affected individuals could rise as more cases are reported. The public is urged to maintain strict hygiene measures, including regular handwashing and ensuring food is thoroughly cooked before consumption.
This incident has sparked concerns over food safety in the county, with calls for stricter inspections of eateries and food vendors. Authorities have assured the public that they are working to contain the situation and prevent a full-blown outbreak.
Residents experiencing symptoms have been advised to seek medical attention immediately.
