A Kilifi-based pastor was arraigned in court this week on allegations of radicalization and endangering the lives of his congregants, in violation of Section 12(d) of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012.
The pastor, who leads the New Foundation Church in Chakama Location, was arrested following a multi-agency investigation into his activities. Authorities claim he indoctrinated followers with dangerous teachings that discouraged them from seeking medical treatment in hospitals. Instead, congregants were instructed to climb a “sacred” tree within the church compound to receive healing, an act investigators say contributed to life-threatening outcomes.
Further reports indicate that the pastor administered and sold a substance called maji ya uzima (water of life) to his followers at Ksh 200 per litre. The water, drawn from a well inside the church premises, was claimed to possess healing powers.
Preliminary investigations have raised grave concerns. At least two congregants are suspected to have died as a result of relying on these teachings instead of seeking proper medical care. Additionally, over 200 others are believed to be at risk if the church’s practices are not urgently curtailed.
Law enforcement officials emphasized that while Kenya upholds the constitutional right to freedom of worship, this freedom should not be abused to jeopardize lives. They urged the public to exercise caution and avoid joining organizations that promote doctrines contrary to sound health practices and public safety.
The court has granted the investigation team ten days to complete their inquiries. The matter is scheduled for mention on May 5, 2025. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further harm and to ensure that those responsible for endangering lives face the full force of the law.
This incident comes amid heightened vigilance across the country regarding religious organizations, following past tragedies linked to rogue preachers exploiting faith for personal gain.
